The
most traditional way of buying concert tickets is from the venue box office.
There is a common belief that you have the best chance at the first rows
only if you go to the box office the morning the tickets go onsale. They
actually print the first several rows before they go onsale, so if you want
the absolute best concert tickets, this is how to do it.
First,
you have to know when they go on sale and get ready. On the morning the
tickets go on sale, you must get up early and get out to the venue. You also
should have cash to buy the tickets if that is what the box office accepts.
They may take a credit card, but you should check before the morning and be
prepared.
Gone
are the days of “first come first served” tickets. Most venues and concert
promoters allow you to line up early in the morning, but only to get a
wristband. Being first in line only guarantees that you will have a chance
at being first in line for tickets. It is common for concert promoters to
hand out wristbands with a number on them to everyone in line. After the
wristbands are handed out, the concert promoter pulls a random number, and
that person is first in line. For example, if the promoter picks #002 as the
first in line to buy tickets, then the first person who got a wristband
(#001) is actually last in line. This is done to discourage people lining up
overnight at the venue, or fighting to be first in line. As long as you get
in line and get a wrist band, you will have as good a chance as anyone to be
near the front of the line to buy tickets. At some of the really hot
concerts, there are a limited number of wristbands, so you need to get to
the venue as early as possible to make sure you get a chance at tickets.
There
are a couple of things you can do to make your chances better to get good
tickets. Recruit some friends to go and stand in line with you. Each person
gets one wristband, but if you have some people with you, you can increase
your chances at a good number. Pay your teenage brother and his 10 friends
$10 a piece to go with you and get a wristband. You might want to space them
out in line, so you have a better chance at getting a good place in line
when they draw the random number. Whoever gets the best place in line, give
them the money to buy your tickets. This is a common way ticket brokers get
tickets. I have even seen ticket brokers pay homeless people to stand in
line for them. If you have other people stand in line for you, they must
buy the tickets, so you must bring cash for them to pay. This is how it
works in the Los Angeles area.
Buy
Tickets the Day of the Event
If you
don’t mind waiting until the last minute, you can get tickets to a sold out
concert or sporting event at a reasonable price. Many ticket brokers have a
supply of tickets the day of a event and are willing to sell them at a
reduced rate. You might call the broker the day of the event and offer them
a price. If they are not willing to take it, you can still get tickets.
Go to
the venue and look for people selling tickets. They will lower their price
the closer the event start time gets. You can get tickets from them, or they
will not be able to get anything for the tickets. Also don’t forget to ask
around for single tickets. A friend of saw all four home games in Anaheim
for the Angels 2002 world series, for free! Thats right, he stood around and
asked people if they had an extra ticket, and got one to every game.
There
are tickets available to every event, at a reasonable price if you are
willing to get creative. Also, don’t forget the box office for tickets the
day of the game or concert. Be persistent and you will get in!
Keep in
mind, that buying and selling tickets on the property of the event is
illegal in most cities. You can meet somewhere offsite, but if you sell
tickets on the stadium grounds, you could get your tickets confiscated, and
receive a ticket from the police in exchange. Now, if you are the buyer, you
usually do not have to worry, unless the police see the transaction and then
take your ticket and the money you paid for evidence. My suggestion is that
you call the ticket brokers in the area a couple hours before the event and
make them an offer.
